Overview

RepoTop20 ranks the GitHub repositories created in the last seven days by stars and publishes the top 20 every Tuesday: a 30-second vertical reel, a one-page site at repotop20.com, and a post from @RepoTop20 on X.

Challenge

The fastest-rising new repos are worth knowing about, but GitHub’s own lists are noisy. Clones, star-farmed projects and one owner flooding the list crowd out the real work, and turning a ranked list into a good-looking video every week by hand doesn’t last.

Solution

A scheduled pipeline does the whole run. It pulls the week’s repos from the GitHub API, applies standing list rules (blocked repos, clones, adult content, one slot per owner), and sorts each repo into a color-coded group. Remotion renders the reel from the data, a Python script synthesizes a soundtrack timed to every card, and the same data builds and deploys the site to Cloudflare Pages. A guarded script posts to X only on Tuesdays, only after the site shows the new list, and never when a top-5 repo looks star-farmed.

Current status

Live. It runs every Tuesday morning, deploys repotop20.com and posts to @RepoTop20.

Vision

A weekly signal people can trust for what’s new on GitHub, made and published entirely by software.
